What is a Hazardous Material ?

A hazardous material, also known as HAZMAT or Dangerous Good (DG) is any item or agent which has the potential to cause harm to humans, animals, or the environment, either by itself or through interaction with other factors; the aforementioned item or agent could be biological, chemical, radiological, and/or physical.

There are nine classes of Hazardous Materials. (See image at the top of the page for the breakdown).

UN Number (Indentification Number)

A UN number is a four-digit number that identifies hazardous materials, and articles in the framework of international transport. Some hazardous substances have their own UN numbers, while sometimes groups of chemicals or products with similar properties receive a common UN number.
